The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack $16.98 This soundtrack to the 2000 documentary film about Elliott (directed by his daughter) also serves as a pretty good career retrospective. The 20 cuts are taken from an assortment of live, studio, television, radio, and film performances from 1953 to 1998. The chief flaw of Elliott's output is that he was not an innovator. He wrote little of his own music (only one of the songs on this release is original), and his competent, homespun brand of folk was similar to, but not nearly as good as, Woody Guthrie's or early Bob Dylan's. The strength of Elliott's music, on the other hand, is that he sounded the same pretty much whenever he sang or recorded. If you liked traditional American folk at any time during the last half of the 20th century, Elliott was the old reliable, there to provide it for international audiences. So it's no surprise that this soundtrack is a consistent listen of engaging, if unremarkable, roots American folk music. Elliott sounds a lot better, of course, when he's performing duets with greater talents, and there are a number of such duets on this compilation, including performances on Johnny Cash's television show in the late '60s and early '70s; a 1953 studio cut with his mentor, Guthrie (also including Sonny Terry on harmonica and vocals); and a song apiece with Odetta and Derroll Adams. Boogaloo to Jack McDuff $16.98 Jack McDuff was closer to soul and funk than most of the jazz Hammond B-3 organ players who found wider audiences after the success of Jimmy Smith, and his death in 2001 was a tremendous loss. This neat little compilation from Scufflin' Records features several young organ jazz combos in a tribute to McDuff, and it's all a whole lot of fun. Cleaned a Lot of Plates in Memphis $12.73 With a lineup that features former members of such seminal noisemakers as the Oblivians and the Neckbones, it should come as little surprise that Cool Jerks flat-out rock. No ham-fisted critical pigeonholing, carefully chosen faux-vintage clothing, or fancy haircuts are needed to dress up what these boys are doing. The album title is itself a bit of a double entendre, serving as a nod to both the John Fogerty classic from which the line is borrowed ("Proud Mary") and to all the time the bandmembers have spent washing dishes and daydreaming about rock & roll. Nothing could more aptly sum up Cool Jerks, as their sound is that of pure, unkempt rock & roll; it's not all glamour -- in fact, sometimes it's downright ugly -- but even when it gets rough, you'll be begging for more. Like other groups cut from the same Memphis-flavored, blues/rock/soul cloth, like the Reigning Sound, Cool Jerks play rock & roll with a sense of urgency that borders on sermonizing. While the Jerks aren't quite as polished as the Sound, they aren't nearly as sleazy as the Oblivians, either. Instead, they are a well-balanced mix of the Oblivians' ferocity and the Neckbones' swagger and jangle. The band plays music that comes straight from rock's roots, the kind of music that comes from being schooled in the masters and possessing a flawless record collection. One of the album's best tracks, "Let It Go and Rock!," was co-authored by Dave Boyer and Forrest Hewes (both formerly of the Neckbones), and the guys trade vocals lines throughout the song, making it perhaps the most shining example of the great things these musicians are capable of when they put their heads together. The Boyer-penned "Man and a Woman" is barebones drums-and-guitar blues-rock, calling to mind the more reserved moment of Jon Spencer, while his "Not the Only Girl in Town" is an ode to not letting the world get you down, sort of the anti-blues. Sometimes known as Jack Oblivian, Jack Yarber's tracks are raw and ambitious, ranging from mid-tempo janglers full of background "oohs and ahhs" ("Friend of a Loner"), to rockabilly flair ("Skip a Beat") and riotous rockers ("Can't Quit"). Cool Jerks' rendition of Smokey Robinson's classic "You Really Got a Hold on Me," though downright polished by Jerks standards, sounds like a 3 a.m. jam session: rough around the edges, but so gut-wrenchingly honest that the flaws only make it more beautiful. Yarber's "Certified Fool" brings the album to its knees with vocals raspier than Scott McCloud's and what sounds like an army of guitars freaking out for the duration of the song. If this were a big-tent revival, Yarber would be the guy rolling around on the ground speaking in tongues. Next, Hewes and Boyer check in again with their dueling vocal attack on "Who You Running To?," which may well be the album's strongest, catchiest track. The Lot $23.98 Meet Stan Sloan...Spent a few tours working for the U.S. Army in Korea, home to scores of GI camp towns providing those basic amenities, ranging from sleazy bars, easy women, leather shoes to handbags. Battered survivor of a failed marriage and predatory divorce lawyers, Stan's only problems now are the politics within the Army's Third Signal Brigade headquartered in Seoul. But this problem is minor compared to those which will soon engulf him when his Korean American friend talks him into a partnership.
